DJ Terry Mullen

MYSPACE  <>  TWITTER  <> DISCOGS  <>  THE DJ LIST

Terry Mullan, Chicago’s turntablist extraordinaire, turns out dance floors week after week throughout the US and abroad. Any true fan of House Music knows his name, and celebrates his amazing DJ sets. His credits include Coachella, Sullivan Room, Bugged Out, The End, Footwork, and Ruby Skye amongst raves as far off as Japan, Australia and Germany. He has developed a faithful following to those who know through his signature style of funky quirky jacking acid house combined with cutting and scratching making up an entirely new genre all his own.

Although his roots began in hip-hop, he found himself smack in the middle of the Chicago house explosion. House and Disco were styles of music that were entirely new to Terry, but the match was struck. Soon after gaining inspiration from Chicago air personalities like Farley “Jackmaster” Funk, Fast Eddie, Armando, & Mike “Hitman” Wilson via 102.7 WBMX, Terry made house his home. Next, when acid house hit the US, the link was completed. It was that added flavor he was waiting for, something new, twisted and forward.  And with the addition of the Detroit sound, this was it, three different languages, disco, house and techno. They could all translate the same message together or apart from one another.

Now based in San Diego, Terry has been featured on  Robsoul, Definitive, Control, Funk’d, Chicago Housing Commission, Aciiieeed, and on his own imprint, Catalyst Recordings. He has released tracks for  Sneak, Ian Pooley, Halo Varga, Mazi, Angel Alanis & TJR, as well as for himself under the monikers, Acid OG’s, Speakerphreaker, Tone Broke, and as Serotonin project on Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva’s former imprint Definitive which featured Terry’s track “Sidewinder” on the Chemical Brothers “Brother’s Gonna’ Work It Out” Mix CD.  Terry’s DJ’ing, label and tracks have earned him a reputation that extends worldwide.  This man is truly a living legend.

His talent has earned him a culturally diverse following of loyal fans that are eager to hear how his production evolves. Expect the name Stillwell to be popping up on the radar more frequently as true music-lovers get wind of this up-and-coming producer.

Stillwell with partner and VJ Pogoda provide an engaging and exciting live audio-visual experience. With the combination of Stillwell’s Live PA and Pogoda’s Live Visuals, each performance is a unique and custom display of music production alongside video projection, costuming, and décor. Stillwell is not a DJ, he does not use turntables, CDJ’s or Serrato as many club DJs do. He is a producer and live re-mixer who, using program-based hardware, combines original tracks with techno and electro tracks by other producers. This allows him the flexibility to create a set tailored live to each audience, and the freedom to merge layers and sounds from several different tracks to shape each performance as it happens. Pogoda provides visual elements in many different forms. From VJ-ing (live video mixing) using software and midi to control projectors and LCD screen images, to customizing costumes and event décor, to booking live performers, she is able to adapt the show to each venue. While most club nights are like going to a great film, with Stillwell and Pogoda it’s more like stepping inside the movie, interacting with the characters, and being inspired by the creativity around you.

Derek Micheal aka DM rounds out our list of the best west coast DJs.  Established as one of Canada’s premier DJ act’s, holding residencies at the world’s most prestigious venues such as Club Tresor (Berlin) and Tokyo’s Club Core, since 1996, Derek Micheal (aka DM) has consistently incorporated influences from the bizarre to the sublime. His studio tracks, released through Hor-Zu, Sender and most recently, critic’s darling Detroit Underground Records, reflect Michael’s deep knowledge and vast historical understanding of Western musical practice. A knowledge which he has consistently shared with audiences around the world.

Growing up in Windsor/Detroit, Micheal has existed in a unique geographical area where the radio and television signals overlap, cultures and tradition blur, and an an undercurrent of rebellion has consistently charged the musical experience. From Jazz to Motown, the Stooges, to Plastikman, Derek Michael is heir, archivist, and activist to, for and within this daunting and influential legacy. His philological approach to recording affords Michael the opportunity to access, re-open and expand dialogues with sources that electronic music has supposedly killed, while still operating within a general “techno” framework. The results of these investigations are a highly reflexive, meta-musical experience imbued with generous amounts of personality where Michael’s innovation resides within his adoption of an electro-musical historical materialism. Plus he can make you shake your ass.
